General Loan Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must have a service-connected disability (either injury or disease), you must currently receive or be eligible to receive service connected disability benefits and you must qualify for a Specially Adapted Housing Grant.
Loan Program Description
Veterans that have specific service-connected disabilities may be entitled to a loan in connection with a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs for the purpose of constructing an adapted dwelling or modifying an existing dwelling to meet the veteran's needs. The goal of the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Program is to provide a barrier-free living environment which affords the veteran a level of independent living he or she may not normally enjoy.
Loan Terms
The veteran's eligibility and subsequent approval for a grant and his/her eligibility for loan guaranty benefits entitles them to apply for and use a direct loan, in conjunction with an SAH grant, to assist either in the purchase of a new home which will be adapted or an existing home already adapted, or in the remodeling of an existing home to meet their service-connected disabilities. This loan is not tied to the difference between the cost of the adaptations or cost to acquire an adapted home and the maximum grant amount.
This is a direct loan under the SAH program and is available, should a veteran need the financing and choose to use it.
The interest rate is variable and the length of the loan is not to exceed 360 months. Payments are made monthly and the maximum loan amount if $33,000.
