How to train my cat to learn his name?

Most kitten can be taught to respond to their names, and your task is made very much easier because your young kitten or cat will have very quickly identified you as his source of food and affection.

Training objectives:
To help your kitten or cat know his name and be able to distinguish it from other words or cats' names.

Training Steps:

  1. Always use the same name whenever you address the cat. Try to decide the name at the beginning, and avoid using other forms or abbreviations.
  2. Call out your cat's name clearly, using a high-pitched, chanting tone.
  3. If he ignores you, do not offer a treat, and try again. When your cat does look at you, give him a treat and praise him again using his name.
  4. When his attention wanders, repeat his name. With luck, he will turn his attention back to you and you can offer him another treat. With repetition, for example, when you are grooming him or stroking him, your cat will learn to respond to his name.
