How can I tell if my cat is overweight?

  • The normal weight for a cat can vary considerably, although most adults should weigh about 3.5kg - 4.5kg (11 pounds) depending on breed, age, and gender.
  • More significant than absolute weight is the change in weight over a period of time, because of an adult cat is at a stable weight for a length of time and then starts either gaining or losing weight conspicuously, this could indicate a problem.
  • Your veterinarian will be able to look at your cat and let you know if it is the correct weight for its age, sex, and breed.
